La Dame de Montrose 2006 is the second wine of Château Montrose, offering a more approachable yet still deeply structured expression of this legendary St. Estèphe estate. While Château Montrose is renowned for its power, complexity, and remarkable ageing potential, La Dame de Montrose brings elegance, refinement, and earlier drinkability, making it an outstanding introduction to the estate’s signature style.
The 2006 vintage presents a beautifully evolved Bordeaux blend, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with supporting roles from Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. On the nose, it exudes classic left-bank aromas of blackcurrant, cassis, graphite, cedarwood, and subtle floral notes. The palate is rich and layered, with dark berry fruit, tobacco, earthy minerality, and well-integrated oak spice, all framed by firm but polished tannins. The wine has an impressive structure, showcasing both power and finesse, with a long, savoury finish that hints at truffle and leather as it continues to evolve.
Château Montrose has long been a benchmark of St. Estèphe, crafting wines that combine masculine intensity with refined complexity. Known for its age-worthy structure, Montrose wines can evolve for decades, gaining layers of richness and nuance. The best vintages, such as 1989 and 2009, are considered some of the greatest wines of Bordeaux, prized by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
La Dame de Montrose, while more accessible in its youth than its grand vin counterpart, still carries the estate’s hallmark depth and structure, making it an exceptional cellaring candidate. The 2006 vintage has matured beautifully, offering a classic, terroir-driven Bordeaux experience with layers of complexity that unfold with every sip.
This structured, refined Bordeaux pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef Wellington, venison, or aged cheeses. Decanting for at least one hour before serving at 16-18°C (60-65°F) will allow the wine to fully express its depth and character.
Medium bodied, firm, earthy, strict, austere wine that is better on the nose, with its earthy and tobacco character than on the palate.
