Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano DOCG 2019 – A Timeless Tribute to Piedmont Heritage

Introducing the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano DOCG 2019, a distinguished expression of Italy’s finest Nebbiolo from the storied Barolo region in Piedmont. This exceptional vintage exemplifies the unwavering commitment of the Michele Chiarlo family—established in 1956—to crafting wines that marry tradition with elegance, capturing the unique terroir of the Langhe.

Winery Background & Terroir

Rooted in centuries of winemaking heritage, the Michele Chiarlo estate has earned renown for producing high-quality wines that truly reflect the character of Piedmont. The "Tortoniano" Barolo derives its name from the Tortonian geological era, emphasizing the influence of the region's calcareous-clay marl soils, which are rich in magnesium and manganese. These soils, along with the estate’s southwest-facing slopes at altitudes between 240 and 360 meters, lend the wine its exceptional structure, finesse, and complex aromatics.

Grape Composition & Vinification

Made exclusively from 100% Nebbiolo, the grapes are meticulously hand-harvested in mid-October to ensure optimal ripeness. Following harvest, the selected fruit undergoes a traditional fermentation process in oak vats, with a carefully controlled maceration period of 15 days. This method preserves the delicate balance of tannins and fruit aromatics, laying the foundation for a wine that is both powerful and refined.

Aging & Maturation

After fermentation, the wine is aged for a minimum of two years in large oak casks, which impart subtle nuances of spice, vanilla, and well-integrated oak while enhancing the wine’s natural elegance. Subsequent bottle refinement allows the wine to fully harmonize and reveal its true character, making it a prime example of the enduring quality of Barolo.

Tasting & Pairing

On the palate, the Michele Chiarlo Barolo Tortoniano DOCG 2019 reveals a complex array of flavors—from the rich, ripe red fruits to delicate earthy and spicy notes. Its balanced structure and fine tannins make it an ideal match for mushroom pasta, roasted or grilled poultry, and matured cheeses.

Serving Recommendations:

  • Temperature: Serve at 18-20°C (64-68°F)
  • Decanting: Decant for at least one hour to fully open up the wine
  • Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar for an additional 8-10 years for further evolution

Elevate your wine collection with this timeless Barolo that embodies the passion and heritage of Piedmont.
